GATE Syllabus For Materials Science (XE-C)

GATE Syllabus For Materials Science: GATE or Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering is an examination for that commenced all over India for testing the comprehensive skills of the candidates so that they can be admitted in the Undergraduate course for the subjects like Technology/ Engineering/Architecture and PG level subjects in Science. Indian Institute of Science commencing GATE Syllabus for materials Science (XE-C) provided below:

GATE Section I: Processing of Materials:

Powder synthesis, crystal growth techniques, sintering, chemical methods, preparation of nanoparticles and thin films, zone refining

GATE Section II: Characterisation Techniques:

Spectroscopic techniques like UV-vis, IR, Optical and Electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Raman,

GATE Syllabus Section III: Structure and Imperfections:

Coordination and radius ratio concepts, space groups, indices of planes, close packing in solids, Crystal symmetry, point groups,  bonding in materials, point defects, dislocations, surface energy and equilibrium shapes of crystals, grain boundaries

Section IV: Thermodynamics and Kinetics:

Phase rule, invariant reactions, lever rule, Fick’s laws of diffusion, basic heat treatment of metals, phase diagrams, solid solutions, temperature dependence of diffusivity, solidification and phase transformations, and mechanisms of diffusion

Section V: Properties of Materials:

This section comprises of five parts:

  1. Mechanical Properties: Stress-strain response of metallic, yield strength, tensile strength and modulus of elasticity, ceramic and polymer materials, toughness, plastic deformation, fatigue, creep and fracture
  2. Electronic Properties: Free electron theory, Fermi energy, dielectric behaviour, density of states, semiconductors, Hall effect, elements of band theory, piezo, Ferro, pyroelectric materials
  3. Magnetic Properties: Diamagnetism, Ferro Origin of magnetism in metallic and ceramic materials, paramagnetism, and ferrimagnetism
  4. Thermal Properties: Specific heat, thermoelectricity, thermal conductivity and thermal expansion
  5. Optical Properties: gas and solid-state lasers, absorption and transmission of electromagnetic radiation in solids, Refractive index, electrooptic and magneto-optic materials, spontaneous and stimulated emission

Section VI: Material types:

The concept of amorphous, crystallinity and its effect on physical properties, effect of environment on materials, classification of polymers, processing and applications, metal, single crystals and polycrystalline materials,  ceramic, polymers, polymerization, composites, structure and properties, additives for polymer products

Section VII: Environmental Degradation: – Oxidation, Corrosion, and prevention

Syllabus SectionVIII: Elements of Quantum Mechanics and Mathematics:

Quantum mechanical treatment of electrical, analytical solid geometry, Basics of quantum mechanics, differentiation and integration, vectors and tensors, matrices, optical and thermal properties of materials, differential equations, probability and statistics, Fourier series, complex analysis.
